The winners of the third annual BVA Veterinary Photographer of the Year competition have been announced, with ponies and puppies pipping other competitors to the post to scoop the prestigious accolade.

Now in its third year, the competition offers snap-happy entrants the chance to give a unique insight into the daily life of vets and the animals they work with. This year, the competition received more than 500 entries from vets across the UK.

PDSA vet Stephen Ashman captured judges’ attention in the “All creatures great and small” category with his photo of a pair of wild ponies taken on Long Mynd, Shropshire, in January. Meanwhile, Peter Myatt, who graduated from the University of Nottingham this summer, won the “Human:animal bond” category with “Best part of a job”, which showed a laid back 10-week-old cocker spaniel puppy lounging on his lap.

For the first time, the competition also included a Members’ Choice Award, with the winner announced as Australia-based vet Liz Bailey for her photo “Shepherd’s Delight”, which featured her border collie Bea and Australian kelpie Bonnie, taken on a South Australian beach.
