Qualification Overview

This qualification is designed for the training and development of Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) wishing to advance their knowledge and skills in practice nursing to a mastery level beyond that of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Day One Skills and Competences.

It is intended to provide relevant practical skills and underpinning knowledge that is relevant to the role of a Registered Veterinary Nurse working within the practice and consulting environments, and will demonstrate mastery of practice nursing skills. Evidence-based nursing and research is expected throughout this qualification to explore best practice and critically compare current processes.

How long will it take?

This Level 5 diploma offers 60 credits (270 guided learning hours) and can take up to 12-18 months to complete.

What are the entry requirements?

Learners must have a current listing on the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Register of Veterinary Nurses to be able to undertake this qualification.

How is the qualification assessed?

Portfolio

You will compile a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate practical tasks, and knowledge and understanding tasks. Each of the skills listed must be signed off to mastery level by an MRCVS or RVN who holds the VetSkill Level 5 Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Practice Nurse).
The VetSkill Level 5 Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Practice Nurse) skills portfolio is internally assessed by the Centre and externally sampled by VetSkill.

Practical Case Reports

The VetSkill practical skills assessment is a long case scenario lasting approximately 60 minutes plus or minus 10%.

Assignments

You will complete three assignments/case studies to demonstrate knowledge and understanding. All assignments are marked by the Centre.

Written Examination

You will complete six written examinations to demonstrate the knowledge elements of the qualification. The Written Examinations are set and marked by VetSkill.

Practical Skills Assessment

You will be given one long case scenario and professional discussion. The practical skills assessment is set and marked by VetSkill but is carried out in the Centre.
