Level 5 Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Surgical)
This qualification is designed for the training and development of Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) wishing to advance their knowledge and skills in surgical nursing to a mastery level beyond that of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Day One Skills and Competences.
It is intended to provide relevant practical skills and underpinning knowledge that is relevant to the role of a Registered Veterinary Nurse working within the operating theatre and surgical environments, and will demonstrate mastery of surgical nursing skills. Evidence-based nursing and research is expected throughout this qualification to explore best practice, and critically compare current processes.

How long will it take?
This Level 5 Diploma offers 60 credits (270 guided learning hours) and will take up to 12-18 months to complete.
On completion of this qualification you will have achieved the following units:
- Theatre Design and Maintenance
- Asepsis, Infection Control and Theatre Protocol
- Preparation of Surgical Patients
- Surgical Procedures
- Fundamentals of Anaesthesia and Analgesia, and Postoperative Nursing for Surgical Patients
- Instrumentation and Sterilisation
- Practical Surgical Nursing Skills
What are the entry requirements?
Learners must have a current listing on the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Register of Veterinary Nurses to be able to undertake this qualification.
How is the qualification assessed?
You will gather evidence in a portfolio to demonstrate practical tasks, and knowledge and understanding tasks. Each of the skills listed must be signed off to mastery level by an MRCVS or RVN who holds the VetSkill Level 5 Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Surgical) or VTS (Surgical). The VetSkill Level 5 Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Surgical) skills portfolio is internally assessed by the Centre and externally sampled by VetSkill.
Practical Case Reports
You will complete three practical case reports to demonstrate knowledge and understanding. The practical reports are set by VetSkill and marked by the Centre.
You will complete four assignments to demonstrate knowledge and understanding. All assignments are marked by the Centre.
You will complete six written examinations assessing the knowledge elements of the qualification. The written examinations are set and marked by VetSkill.
Practical Skills Assessment (Summative)
You will be given one long case scenario and professional discussion. The practical skills assessment is set and marked by VetSkill, but is carried out at the Centre.
