Farriers are responsible for the maintenance and care of equine feet, and are required to have a thorough understanding of all aspects of equine hoof care across equine disciplines including analysis of gait and advice on equine welfare options. Farriery is a regulated profession and all farriers must register with the Farriers Registration Council.

Assessment methods:

The Written Test presents extended answer questions that test the apprentice’s underpinning knowledge of farriery and the equines they will work on, health and safety, and business skills.
Duration: 3 hours
Location: A suitable location, usually the employer’s premises.
Graded: Fail / Pass / Distinction

This is a structured discussion between the apprentice and the independent assessor and provides the opportunity for the apprentice to demonstrate their Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs).
Duration: 30 minutes (plus 10%)
Location: A suitable location, usually the employer’s premises.
Graded: Fail / Pass / Distinction

The apprentice will be observed carrying out tasks relating to their day-to-day role that allow them to demonstrate their Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs).
Duration: 75 minutes (plus 10%)
