This qualification is designed for the training and development of Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) wishing to advance their knowledge and skills in medical nursing to a mastery level beyond that of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Day One Skills and Competence.
It is intended to provide practical skills and underpinning knowledge relevant to the role of a Registered Veterinary Nurse in the medical clinic environment, and demonstrate mastery of medical nursing skills. Evidence-based nursing and research are expected throughout this qualification to explore best practices and critically compare current processes.
On completion of this qualification, the learner will achieve the following units:
Clinic Design and Biosecurity
Advanced Nursing of Common Medical Disorders
Principles of Advanced Medical Nursing Practice
Analgesia and Advanced Veterinary Nursing Interventions
Diagnostic Techniques and Investigative Procedures
Principles of Oncology
Fundamentals of Emergency Care and Collaborative Practice
Practical Application of Advanced Medical Nursing
This Level 5 Diploma has 279 guided learning hours (GLH) and takes approximately 12-18 months to achieve with a total qualification time (TQT) of 934 hours.

Learners must have a current listing on the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Register of Veterinary Nurses to be able to undertake this qualification, and be working within, or have access to, a medical veterinary patient caseload.

Practical Skills Portfolio
Throughout the qualification, the learner will compile a skills portfolio of evidence to demonstrate mastery of practical skills. This is assessed within the workplace, internally quality assured by the centre and externally quality assured by VetSkill.
Assignments
The learner will complete three assignments throughout the qualification to demonstrate knowledge and understanding. All assignments are assessed and internally quality assured by the centre and externally quality assured by VetSkill.
Case Studies
The learner will complete three case studies throughout the qualification to demonstrate knowledge and understanding. All case studies are assessed and internally quality assured by the centre and externally quality assured by VetSkill.
Written Examination
There is one examination that assesses underpinning knowledge at the end of the qualification. The examination comprises of short-answer and essay questions, and is set and marked by VetSkill.
Practical Examination
There is one long case scenario and a professional discussion. The practical examination is set and marked by VetSkill.
