This qualification is designed for the training and development of Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) wishing to advance their knowledge and skills in practice nursing to a mastery level beyond that of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Day One Skills and Competences.

It is intended to provide practical skills and underpinning knowledge relevant to the role of a Registered Veterinary Nurse in practice and consulting environments, and demonstrate mastery of practice nursing skills. Evidence-based nursing and research are expected throughout this qualification to explore best practices and critically compare current processes.

On completion of this qualification, the learner will achieve the following units:

  • Professional Practice and Legislation

  • Consulting Skills

  • Nutrition and Diet

  • Medical Clinics

  • Prescribing and Dispensing for the Practice Nurse

  • Coaching, Mentoring and Support

  • Practical Practice Nurse Skills

This Level 5 Diploma has 295 guided learning hours (GLH) and takes approximately 12-18 months to achieve with a total qualification time (TQT) of 600 hours.


  • Learners must have a current listing on the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Register of Veterinary Nurses to be able to undertake this qualification.

  • Portfolio

    The learner will compile a skills portfolio to demonstrate mastery of practical skills. Each skill listed must be signed off to mastery level by an MRCVS or RVN who holds the VetSkill Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Practice Nurse). The skills portfolio is assessed and internally quality assured by the centre and externally quality assured by VetSkill.

    Assignment

    The learner will complete one assignment to demonstrate knowledge and understanding. The centre will mark the assignment.

    Practical Case Reports

    The learner will complete three practical case reports to be included in the evidence requirements in the portfolio. The practical case reports are set by VetSkill and marked by the centre.

    Written Examination

    The learner will complete one written examination assessing the six theory units of the qualification. The written examination is set and marked by VetSkill.

    Practical Examination

    The learner will complete one long case scenario and a professional discussion. The practical examination is set and marked by VetSkill.
