The news reflects VetSkill’s mission to expand into further areas of demand for our training providers, a mission that will continue to take shape throughout 2026 and beyond as we explore opportunities within new sectors.

VetSkill’s apprenticeship assessment service is quality-led, flexible, supportive, and designed with our customers in mind.

Level 3 Team Leader (pictured above)

This assessment prepares apprentices to meet the requirements for the role of Team Leader, and consists of two assessment methods, an Apprentice Presentation with Questions and Professional Discussion Underpinned by a Portfolio of Evidence.

The broad purpose of this role is to provide leadership with operational or project responsibilities. Team leaders manage or supervise individuals, teams, or elements of a project, or a combination of these. They offer direction, instructions, and guidance to achieve set goals. They are vital for the smooth running of an organisation’s functions and are often responsible for ensuring that these are correctly administered and maintained in line with legislation and the organisation’s procedures.

The team leader is found in organisations where there is a need for first-line management, supervision or support for teams and senior management, making the role broadly applicable across a wide range of industries, including retail, hospitality, healthcare, public services, and finance. Due to this universal demand, the apprenticeship is one of the UK’s most widely delivered and commonly completed standards.

Level 3 Detection and Protection Working Dog Specialist

To ensure apprentices are fully prepared for the responsibilities of a Detection and Protection Working Dog Specialist, the assessment comprises two components: a Professional Discussion Underpinned by a Portfolio of Evidence and Observation with Questions.

Detection and Protection Working Dog Specialists operate and manage specialist working dog teams in complex environments, often alongside other agencies, and may occasionally work overseas. While they can handle dogs themselves, their primary role involves managing, developing, and supporting basic dog handlers to ensure safe and effective operations.

They are employed across diverse sectors such as Defence, Police, Border Force, Department for Transport, Prison Service, private security firms, and de-mining charities.

Level 4 Animal Training Instructor

This assessment is designed to develop and verify the skills needed for the Animal Training Instructor (ATI) position, delivered through three methods: Professional Discussion Underpinned by a Portfolio of Evidence, Work-Based Observation, and Project, Presentation and Questions.

While varying dependent on species, the role of ATI enables animals to be used in different ways. This could include supporting companionship, assistance, competition, entertainment and security. The broad purpose of the occupation is to plan, manage and deliver the humane training of animals, with particular emphasis on tailoring training to suit a diverse range of guardians and environments. ATIs plan, teach and manage animal training that incorporates positive, reward-based training methods. They work with guardians to help them introduce and reinforce desirable behaviours and avoid or modify undesirable behaviours.

This occupation is found in animal rescue, rehoming and rehabilitation centres, animal and disability charities, public service providers, security and Defence, search and rescue agencies, zoos and safari parks, commercial animal training companies and sole providers of animal training.
