VetSkill awards Farrier apprentices for winning shoe boards
In an effort to proudly celebrate and give special recognition to the exceptional work of apprentices completing the Level 3 End-Point Assessment for Farrier, VetSkill is awarding winning shoe boards.
To undertake the VetSkill Level 3 EPA for Farrier, apprentices must produce a shoe board to be presented at Gateway and later utilised as part of their Professional Discussion component.
The shoe board should typically contain between a minimum of eight (8) and maximum of 12 shoes of the apprentice’s own making during their apprenticeship. Specimen shoes should include a range of styles and examples of concave, hand fullering, forge welding, plain stamping, aluminium and fabricated shoes.
At each first sit round of the EPA for every college, the VetSkill Farrier assessor team selects one shoe board winner. The shoe board is judged for the selection of shoes and overall quality of forging. It should represent the apprentice's best work and shoe effort and pride in the craft.
Winners of the award receive a certificate of achievement as a tangible representation and reminder of their success, along with financial contribution towards professional tools.
Farriers are responsible for the maintenance and care of equine feet with a holistic approach to the equine, for which they must have a thorough understanding of all aspects of equine hoof care throughout the equine disciplines, from grass roots pleasure equines right through to elite competition horses.
VetSkill is an Ofqual, Skills England and DfE approved end-point assessment organisation, putting the apprentice at the heart of our service. The VetSkill Level 3 EPA for Farrier consists of a Written Test, Professional Discussion, and two practical assessments: Unshod Trim and Shoeing Test.
