VetSkill launches new register for Advanced Veterinary Nurses
VetSkill is delighted to launch the Register of Advanced Veterinary Nurses (AVN).
In publishing this new non-statutory voluntary register, VetSkill aims to showcase those who actively hold a regulated post-registration advanced qualification in Veterinary Nursing at Level 5 and above. This will bring together on one accessible register those that hold the VetSkill Level 5 Diplomas in Advanced Veterinary Nursing and those holding other widely industry recognised advanced qualifications, including the Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) and RCVS CertAVN and DipAVN. Those on the register will be issued with an exclusive pin badge to indicate their registered status.
VetSkill recognises the value that nurses holding a post-registration advanced qualification bring to the veterinary profession. To fulfil their role, they require skills mastery, advanced clinical knowledge, critical thinking and enhanced reflection based on the current evidence base.
The establishment of the Register of AVNs further solidifies VetSkill’s commitment to driving forward positive change for veterinary nurses. It will establish career pathways for veterinary nurses and embed standards for the role of AVNs in the veterinary profession. The VetSkill AVN Register will distinguish those with advanced credentials in a special interest area in a way that no other register currently does.
VetSkill is the only registration body to bring together post-registration advanced qualifications in veterinary nursing at Level 5 or above, highlighting the essential role of AVNs and striving to develop the progression pathway for veterinary nurses. The Register of AVNs complements the existing registers established by VetSkill, including the Suitably Qualified Person (SQP) register, authorised by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) as the regulatory body.
Individuals successfully completing a VetSkill Level 5 Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing are automatically eligible to join VetSkill’s Register of AVNs. VetSkill is committed to serving to gain public recognition of knowledge, competence and commitment to exceptionally high professional standards through its registers.
If you hold a VTS, RCVS CertAVN or DipAVN, you can apply to join the register here.
Leanne Ashford, Qualifications Manager at VetSkill, said:
“We are delighted to expand our existing registers and be able to formally recognise the valuable contribution advanced veterinary nurses bring to the profession. The launch of the VetSkill Register of Advanced Veterinary Nurses signifies a huge step for the profession, and rewards the dedication of those who have achieved advanced qualifications post-registration”.
Sam Double, CEO at VetSkill, said:
“There is currently no register that showcases veterinary nurses with advanced, industry recognised qualifications, which is not the case for veterinary surgeons. VetSkill hopes that in addressing this shortfall it will empower veterinary nurses to drive the profession forward towards the advanced practitioner status afforded to their human nursing counterparts”.
