The equine groom is committed to the safety and welfare of the horses in their care. They will use their theoretical knowledge, understanding, practical experience, and empathy to maintain the horse's physical and psychological wellbeing within a safe working environment. They are an integral part of the horse's life, providing essential day-to-day care.   

Occupational routes for this apprenticeship include: 

  • Breeding

  • Driving

  • Racing

  • Riding

  • Non-riding

Assessment methods:

  • The Knowledge Test is completed in exam conditions and has 50 multiple-choice questions. It is taken online and remotely invigilated.

    Duration: 75 minutes

    Location: A suitable location as per VetSkill’s Remote Invigilation Policy

    Graded: Fail / Pass / Distinction

  • The apprentice will be observed carrying out tasks relating to their day-to-day role that allow them to demonstrate their Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs).

    Duration: 5 hours

    Location: Usually held in the workplace

    Graded: Pass / Distinction

  • This is a structured interview between the apprentice and the independent assessor, allowing the apprentice to demonstrate core and specific Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours.

    This assessment method takes place after the Knowledge Test and Practical Observation.

    Duration: 60-75 minutes

    Location: Usually held in the workplace

    Graded: Pass / Distinction
