This qualification provides an opportunity for learners to demonstrate their skills and understanding of delivering high level care to animals in a veterinary environment, assisting Veterinary Nurses and Veterinary Surgeons. Furthermore, it may be used as a stepping stone onto the VetSkill VTEC Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Companion Animal) qualification, subject to additional entry conditions being met.

On completion of this qualification, the learner will achieve the following units:

  • Legislation and Safe Working Practices

  • Animal Health and Welfare

  • Animal Environment and Accommodation

  • Introduction to Patient Care

  • Introduction to Animal Anatomy and Physiology

  • Veterinary Care Support

  • Assisting with Laboratory Procedures

  • Assisting with Diagnostic Imaging

  • Techniques in Medical Patient Care

  • Techniques in Surgical Patient Care

This Level 2 Diploma has 400 guided learning hours (GLH) and takes approximately 18-24 months to achieve with a total qualification time (TQT) of 1160 hours.


  • There are no formal or specific academic or learning entry requirements for learners undertaking this programme. However, learners must be working (paid or voluntary) within a veterinary practice in order to fulfill the practical requirements of the qualification.

  • Portfolio of Evidence

    The learner will gather evidence in a portfolio to demonstrate practical and knowledge and understanding tasks. The portfolio can be an e-portfolio or paper-based - VetSkill has no preference.
