The VetSkill VTEC Level 3 Award in the Principles and Practices of Assessment has been designed for learners who wish to expand their underpinning knowledge and understanding in the principles and practices of assessment for the Further Education (FE) sector.

This qualification has been rigorously developed to include the essentials for supporting the development of the theoretical knowledge and understanding necessary to progress to further Level 3 qualifications for assessors.

Learners who may wish to register for this qualification could include, but are not limited to those who:

  • wish to pursue a career as a qualified assessor

  • work in the Further Education (FE) sector

  • are in mentoring or coaching roles, who assist learners in collating assessment evidence

Those who wish to pursue a career as a qualified assessor, and be able to make autonomous assessment decisions regarding a learner’s vocational competence/practical skills will be required to successfully achieve the VetSkill VTEC Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocational Competence.

This Level 3 Award has 25 guided learning hours (GLH) with a total qualification time (TQT) of 63 hours.


  • Learners must evidence capability in numeracy, literacy, written and spoken English and mathematics. This would typically include GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (or A* to C) including English and mathematics, or equivalent, to register on this programme. Equivalent qualifications or experiential evidence may be acceptable.

    This qualification is available to learners of 16 years of age and over. 

  • Portfolio of Evidence

    Throughout the qualification, learners will compile a portfolio of written evidence to demonstrate underpinning knowledge and understanding. This is assessed and internally quality assured by the centre, and externally quality assured by VetSkill.

    Multiple-Choice Online Examinations

    There is one online multiple-choice examination that assesses underpinning knowledge and understanding. Examinations are set and marked by VetSkill.
