VetSkill has developed the new VetSkill VTEC Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Equine) in line with the update to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Day One Skills (DOS), Day One Competences (DOCs) and Professional Behaviours for Veterinary Nurses. This updated qualification embraces the evolving evidence-based veterinary nursing sector. It encompasses contemporary veterinary nursing practice and replaces the previous VetSkill Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Equine).

This qualification will provide learners with the practical competence and underpinning knowledge required to apply to join the RCVS Register of Veterinary Nurses.

It has been designed to develop veterinary nurses with a holistic approach to their work, a passion for making a difference to the lives of equines, and a robust understanding of their professional responsibilities.

This Level 3 Diploma has 600 guided learning hours (GLH) with a total qualification time (TQT) of 4200.

  • Learners must have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A* - C (or 9-4), including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject, to register as a Student Veterinary Nurse on this programme. For those who do not meet the GCSE requirement, alternative qualifications may be acceptable. Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths are sufficient as an equivalent to GSCEs in English Language and Mathematics.

  • Portfolio of Evidence

Throughout the qualification, learners will compile a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their practical competency against the RCVS Day One Skills and Professional Behaviours and the SQP Code of Practice requirements. This is assessed by a work-based assessor, internally quality assured by the centre and externally quality assured by VetSkill.

    Assignments

There are three assignments throughout the qualification to demonstrate knowledge and understanding. All assignments are assessed and internally quality assured by the centre and externally quality assured by VetSkill.

    Multiple-Choice Online Examinations

There are six online examinations throughout the qualification to assess underpinning knowledge. Examinations are set and marked by VetSkill.

    Practical Skills Assessment (Formative)

Learners will be given a formative practical assessment comprising six tasks to provide feedback on their competency against some RCVS Day One Skills. The practical skills assessment is set by VetSkill but is carried out at and assessed by the centre.

VetSkill Licence to Practise Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)

Once all other assessments have been passed, learners will undertake the VetSkill Licence to Practise OSCE.

    • The College of Animal Welfare Horsham

    • The College of Animal Welfare Huntingdon
