VetSkill has developed the new VetSkill VTEC Level 5 Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Emergency and Critical Care) in collaboration with major stakeholders and sector experts. It is designed for the training and development of Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) wishing to advance their knowledge and skills in emergency and critical care nursing to a mastery level beyond that of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Day One Skills and Competences.

This Ofqual-regulated qualification provides practical skills and underpinning knowledge relevant to the role of an RVN working within the emergency and critical care environment, and demonstrates mastery of emergency and critical care nursing skills.  

On completion of this qualification, the learner will achieve the following units:

  • The Fundamentals of Emergency and Critical Care

  • Primary Management of the Emergency and Critical Patient

  • Interventions for the Emergency and Critical Patient

  • Management of Emergency and Critical Care Presentations

  • Transfusion Medicine

  • Collaborative Practice and Wellbeing

  • Practical Application of Advanced Emergency and Critical Care Nursing

This Level 5 Diploma has 261 guided learning hours (GLH) with a total qualification time (TQT) of 636 hours.

 
  • Learners must have a current listing on the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Register of Veterinary Nurses to undertake this qualification, and be working within, or have access to, a veterinary emergency and critical care patient caseload.

  • Practical Skills Portfolio

    Throughout the qualification, the learner will compile a skills portfolio of evidence to demonstrate mastery of practical skills. This is assessed within the workplace, internally quality assured by the centre and externally quality assured by VetSkill.

    Assignments

    The learner will complete three assignments throughout the qualification to demonstrate knowledge and understanding. All assignments are assessed and internally quality assured by the centre and externally quality assured by VetSkill.

    Case Studies

    The learner will complete three case studies throughout the qualification to demonstrate knowledge and understanding. All case studies are assessed and internally quality assured by the centre and externally quality assured by VetSkill.

    Written Examination

    There is one examination that assesses underpinning knowledge at the end of the qualification. The examination comprises multiple-choice, short-answer, and essay questions, and is set and marked by VetSkill.

    Practical Examination

    There is one long case scenario and a professional discussion. The practical examination is set and marked by VetSkill.
