The VetSkill VTEC Level 3 Diploma in Farriery has been developed in line with the Farrier’s Registration Council (FRC) requirements and mapped to the Skills England Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours for Farriery. This qualification embraces the evolving evidence-base in Farriery.
This regulated qualification is intended to provide the knowledge, practical competence and professional behaviours necessary for independent practice as farriers, and successful completion of the qualification is designed to provide eligibility to apply to join the FRC Register of Farriers in Great Britain.
This Level 3 Diploma has 630 guided learning hours (GLH) with a total qualification time (TQT) of 3760 hours.

Learners must evidence capability in numeracy, literacy, and science, written and spoken English and mathematics. This would typically include GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (or A* to C) including English, mathematics and a science subject, or equivalent, to register on this programme.

Online Examination
This examination comprises multiple choice and short answer questions. This examination is set and assessed by VetSkill.
Case-based assessment
This case-based assessment demonstrates knowledge and understanding applied to individual equine case studies. This case-based assessment is set by VetSkill, assessed and internally quality assured by the centre and externally quality assured by VetSkill.
Professional Discussion
The professional discussion allows learners to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding during a one-to-one discussion with an assessor. This assessment is set and assessed by VetSkill.
Shoe making test
This is a practical test of the learner’s shoe making competence. The shoe making test is set by VetSkill, assessed and internally quality assured by the centre and externally quality assured by VetSkill.
Professional Behavioural Evaluation
The professional behavioural tool progressively assesses the behaviour of the learner until all professional behaviours are deemed to have been passed at the appropriate level. The professional behavioural tool is set by VetSkill, assessed and internally quality assured by the centre and externally quality assured by VetSkill.
Unshod trim
This is a practical test of the learner’s ability to trim an equine. The unshod trim is set by VetSkill, assessed and internally quality assured by the centre and externally quality assured by VetSkill.
Shoeing Test
This is a practical test of the learner’s competence to shoe equines. The shoeing test is set by VetSkill, assessed and internally quality assured by the centre and externally quality assured by VetSkill.
