This VetSkill VTEC Level 4 Award for Animal Medicines Advisors (SQP - Companion Animal) is designed for the training and development of learners wishing to gain the necessary qualification to be able to prescribe and supply veterinary medicine classes POM-VPS and/or NFA-VPS to companion animals.

This qualification is intended to provide relevant SQP competencies, knowledge and understanding that will enable the prescription and supply of medicines that fall under the POM-VPS and NFA-VPS categories within the companion animal group. Additionally, SQPs will develop a broad understanding of animal health and disease, and the skills to identify parasite infestations and select appropriate medicines to prescribe. The SQP must be able to provide advice on the safe use, handling, administration and disposal of all medicines that fall within the companion animal category. Being a regulated professional, the SQP is required to maintain and update their knowledge and skills by means of undertaking relevant Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

This companion animal qualification includes the following species: cat, dog, rabbit and ferret.

This Level 4 Award has 70 guided learning hours (GLH) with a total qualification time (TQT) of 102 hours.

  • Learners undertaking this programme may already have completed a Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing and be an RCVS Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) or be a layperson with no prior veterinary-related qualifications.

Employment or work experience within a Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) registered premises, a veterinary practice registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), or a retail pharmacy registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) may be beneficial in assisting in preparation towards the final assessment.

The nature of both the learning and assessment is such that basic literacy and numeracy skills are required. Therefore, the centre must determine if an applicant meets these requirements before they commence the programme through initial assessment.

  • Multiple-Choice Online Exam (MCQ)

There are two online examinations throughout the qualification to assess underpinning knowledge. Examinations are set and marked by VetSkill.

    Online Scenario-Based Professional Discussion

Once the two online examinations have been passed, learners will undertake an online scenario-based professional discussion. This is set and marked by VetSkill.

    • Chester Veterinary Training Centre

    • The College of Animal Welfare Huntingdon
